Cornard Bowls Club was formed in 1964 on land left in trust to the people of Cornard by Cramphorns Nurseries. The club has always made welcome everyone who wants to enjoy the sport of bowls. The club started playing in the English Bowling Association (EBA) Leagues gaining our first success in 1988. There followed stints in the Steeple Bumpstead and Lark leagues, before adopting the Sudbury Triples League (STL), and then the English Bowling Federation (EBF) League which we continue to play in. We actively encourage young people to take up the game while our pensioners have a thriving league both within the club and against other clubs.
The clubhouse has grown from an oversized shed into a small bungalow and then to the ready made clubhouse, inherited from Cornard Football Club, which we have today. The facilities are second to none and we even have space to play carpet bowls in the winter months.
A small army of members have crossed our threshold over the years, certainly far too many to mention by name. Many of these members have given of their time and energy to help the club move forward to the prominent position it holds today. To these people we all give a great big thank you.
The club has achieved many notable successes, both individually and as a team. There are regularly members who make it through to the national finals and we have even had some national champions. Others play in the STL finals and we have had success there as well. Over the last few years we have held an open day each year which apart from being a good laugh and an opportunity to play silly games also gives newcomers an opportunity to get to know us.
The following are some of the successes we have had:
* EBA Triples league; 1988, 1992, 1996, 1999, 2001
* EBA Fours league; 2006
* Quinton Bowl; 2000, 2002
* EBF Durham Trophy; 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2003, 2007
There’s probably a whole load more I could and should say about our history but you get the general idea I hope.
